Demo: Chase Bliss & Cooper FX Generation Loss

The Generation Loss is a warbly dream machine by Cooper FX. And, for 1000 limited units (which sold out immediately), Chase Bliss worked with Cooper FX to put out a special edition.

Despite the sleek as hell enclosure, this is a lo-fi wonder. True to vintage, “Wow” and “Flutter” emulate the sound of a tape or of vinyl speeding up and slowing down. Wow is lower frequency pitch fluctuation, and Flutter is “fast, random pitch fluctuations as well as noise.”

The Wet knob controls the volume of the wet signal (not the same as mix), but when dip switches are engaged, it controls the ramping. While I do get into the dip switches in the video, I don’t fuss with this too much (I leave it at noon).

Gen controls the sample rate of the wet signal. I call it “fidelity” in the title cards since that’s basically what it seems to affect.

HP and LP are high pass and low pass filters. Simple enough.

The Aux switch can either max out Flutter and Wow, max out Gen, or can bypass the HP and LP filters. The Dry toggle controls how much of the dry signal passes. You can have non, a little, or unity. No full wet here. The Hiss toggle, as you’d expect, can add a little or a lot of hiss to your sound.

I play with the dip switches for ramping some. You can set which knobs you want to ramp or bounce (modulate up and down). They can either ramp/bounce up from the current knob setting, or down. They can also either bounce as a square or sine wave. I’ll do another video where I dig into that more in depth, but it’s difficult to convey in a single-shot video.

Song is “Purple Rain” by Prince.
