I’ve been using PreSonus Audio Electronics Studio One for years now—I even pay an annual fee for PreSonus Sphere. So when Sweetwater asked me if I wanted to get my hands on Studio One 6 I jumped at the chance. My verdict: It’s a really solid upgrade that’s going to help my workflow tremendously.

welcome to get offset my name is Emily
and as the weather gets cooler
My Hope for you is that you have a
sweater cardigan or flannel that you
love as much as I love
this flannel here
which is to say you’re going to be
seeing a lot of this flannel for the
next like I’m in Seattle so nine months
I’m not here to talk about flannel
though I could all day I’m here to talk
about presonus’s Studio One six their
newest iteration of my personal favorite
Daw full disclosure though Sweetwater
and PreSonus are sponsoring this video I
have been a customer of PreSonus Studio
One for several years now you’ve
probably seen some other videos I did
with it and if I’m ever recording
anything uh it’s through Studio One I
even pay for Studio One I pay for the
PreSonus sphere which includes Studio
One Professional and it’s updated every
time there’s a new studio one out and
all of their plugins sound packs Etc I
personally think it’s a great deal
um but if you just want to get studio
and professional outright or different
one of their versions outright that’s
also an option
just so you know some of the things I’ll
be covering in this video are only
available in the profession or sphere
it’s not all the features it’s just a
few I’ll do my best to shout out when
it’s my understanding that it’s only
available in professional all right
let’s get started
this is the home page of Studio One six
and if you’re familiar with Studio One
you’re probably thinking that this looks
a lot like it has in previous iterations
and you’d be right but I’m going to
highlight a few of my favorite features
that are new in this edition of Studio
One first things first I have artist
profiles right now I’m set to my band
Sunday Crush but if I click this little
icon right there
I can switch to my personal profile and
my personal music uh some things are the
same just really quickly your news feed
which always has good information in it
your setup so you can see your sample
rate and stuff at a glance and the
interface that you’re using if you want
to change that
you just click there
and change it
now here is the most recent files that’s
pretty standard and I’m used to working
in this view however it has been a
nightmare if I’m trying to find
something that’s kind of older and this
is where things get I think really cool
you have songs and folders now so let’s
say I have something new this test song
I was working on earlier I can either
create a new folder for it or I can move
it to one of my existing folders
yes I do and there it is in my songs
you’ll also see I have pinned some items
and I can similarly pin
let’s do the Sunday Crush intro
close that up and you’ll see pinned
right up here you’ll also see penned in
your recent files so you can see things
at a glance and find the things that you
think are most important fairly quickly
let me pull myself back up
hi hi I’m in the corner now
so Studio One is touting this as the
most personalized iteration of Studio
One ever and also the smartest and
here’s something that they’re talking
about traditionally in Studio One you
could like build your own template those
took a little bit of time to load in my
experience or you would start with a
blank slate now if you go to create a
new song it gives you these smart
options of templates and then you also
have your user templates if you create
any I haven’t created any yet so we have
these very common uh tasks that people
do in Studio One now have these smart
templates let’s go ahead and look at
some of these we have master and release
that’s for mastering songs
a set of tracks for publishing that’s
not something I do a lot rehearse and
perform create a setlist in rehearsal
for performance with real instruments
virtual instruments and backing tracks
this also has lyric integration in the
professional version only and though I’m
not going to show it to you in the song
view I will show it to you in a
recording View and explain to you how I
personally use that
play now just a single instrument uh so
we have Virtual Piano you got your synth
you can play your guitar into an Empire
amp and cabinet Sim
or drums I’m not going to go with that
one um I’m gonna skip record now because
that’s what I’m going to go to
ultimately we have produced beats which
is actually pretty cool create content
with or without video and I will get
into this but this is the first version
of Studio One where you can click and
drag a video into your timeline this is
a game changer for composition people
who are composing for TV film student
projects things like that have
traditionally had to like have the video
on one side and their audio in another
and try to sync it up
this makes it so that you can time
things really specifically and
intentionally I just think it’s a game
changer and that’s not even something
that I do a lot but I can imagine that
being extremely helpful and cool
and then you can import files to mixing
record directly from your interface
and then we have a demo song that you
can explore if you are interested in
doing that so I’m going to go to record
now with guitar and vocal so I’m going
to go ahead and name this
record now example and I’m going to set
my sample rate to 48 that’s what my
interface is set to
and hit OK
so this is what that view looks like
there are some hints for these different
smart templates
let’s take a look it’s just pretty basic
stuff select your input Channel
set your gain arm your tracks start
recording and then a link to learn more
so this comes with a few options it has
a female vocals and male vocals I’m
going to go ahead and remove that track
set my input
for both guitar and vocals and you’ll
see that this is loaded with uh impact
their drumming software so I know that
I’ve used easy drummer in a lot of these
videos but impact it’s it’s not it’s not
hard to use either in fact there are
parts of it that I think make it easier
to use personally I use impact if I want
to create something very basic before I
go and build a full drum track though
you can build full drum tracks and
impact quite easily but I like using
that in place of a metronome because
it’s going to feel a lot more organic
that way
so let’s go ahead and
create
a pattern a drum pattern
so I right clicked and I went to event
I’m sorry I went to instrument parts and
went convert pattern to part
or a part to pattern is how it was and I
have my drum types right here
so I could do four on the floor if I
wanted to or I could do kind of
a different kick pattern we can listen
to that
that’s a pretty standard one uh get some
hi-hats
all right
um let’s do the hi-hat
like that
no actually I want the hi-hat like that
and then I’m going to have the hi-hat
petal
and I’m going to scoot that over like so
and let’s do a snare on the two and the
four and let’s see how that sounds
foreign
this is kind of my default drum beat
so going back to that view here with the
mixers you’ll see that impact has the
kick snare hi-hat Toms and symbols in
separate tracks so you can mix them
differently you can pan them you can add
effects and this is the first version of
Studio One where you can add sidechain
effects to Virtual instruments so that’s
really cool if you want to do like a
gated kick or something like that oh
yeah and here’s the the main for the the
drums
and you can see they have that fat
Channel insert which looks like this so
they’ve even already applied some
effects to these instruments
you can see the send on the kick goes to
drum room
that’s Reverb
and similarly we’ll look at our vocals
which are right here
um
it’s going to sound weird when I do this
but I want you to hear what the vocals
sound like so I’m going to mute myself
within my other recording so
obviously that’s a lot of Reverb but the
vocal verb is right here you can reduce
the level of that Reverb right there you
can also make more changes to the Reverb
by double clicking
and maybe changing it to a small room
making the size a little bit smaller
yeah okay
cool let’s talk about
something else that’s kind of new in
Studio One the pro EQ has gotten some
updates though not a complete overhaul
so let’s set this to vocals obviously
you’re not going to be able to hear this
but female pop just to see
the EQ curve what you can do now that
you couldn’t do before is you can solo
specific bands
this is especially helpful say if you
are recording
drums and there’s just like this kind of
obnoxious frequency in there and you
want to EQ it out traditionally what you
would do is you would
set the cue on one of these to be really
narrow pull it way up with everything
else on and you kind of move it around
until you really heard that specific
frequency and then you kill it so that’s
one way to do it but it’s going to be
easier now that you can just solo those
different frequencies you can find
specifically where that frequency is
without hearing everything else it’s
going to make it a lot easier to find
problem parts
in EQ
so that’s really cool
closing that out
um we can now look at the
the de-esser
we all hate sibilance uh it’s bad in
singing it’s bad in podcasts you can
probably hear some of it now but now you
can hit listen obviously there’s no
track but you can listen uh for those
problematic S’s and then you can reduce
that sound right there so it’s just a
little bit more intelligent and overall
more effective which is great other
plugins that are improved uh include the
auto filter which is very popular one
which I won’t get into there’s also a
vocoder in the professional version
that’s uh pretty neat I was playing
around with it we can
open it up here
little coder
and drag it onto our vocal track and we
can see it here so let me try to
demonstrate
and there are
presets including this one
I can see why it’s called Christmas tree
it doesn’t make I don’t know why you
would use this but you might
this is called Monster this is
[Music]
kitchen
[Music]
so yeah it’s kind of a fun one again
only available in professional
they’re I haven’t really dug into the
vocoder too much because it’s just not
something I generally do
so let’s get back into the
personalization I mean from the guitar
stuff you can see here that uh it has
the amp Sim Empire we can expand that
and then I can go in here and select a
cabinet directly from here let’s go four
by ten like a super Reverb and you can
make those changes now without opening
the whole plugin now you can still do
that
and now this little expanded view is
available for other plugins as well so
if I don’t want to use ampire
I let’s say I want to go over here
and go to my always use folder
that’s new
um I can pull in
a different amp Sim
set it the way I like it
let’s say I want to put fuzz on it so
I’m going to turn on the fuzz
turn up the impedance and the gain
and uh
there we go so next I can expand this
too which you couldn’t previously do
with external plugins and you can see
some important information input type is
mono right now I can switch it to stereo
I can adjust the input level I can turn
the gate on or off
okay threshold
oh and I can turn I can turn over
sampling on or off obviously this isn’t
everything in this plugin but it’s
better than what there previously was
which was really not a whole lot
so I have a guitar track I got Benson I
can see the tuner right there
um so again I wanted to talk a little
bit about the customization because
let’s say I want to go and record but I
noticed that this bar down here it
doesn’t have a pre-count it doesn’t have
anything involving the metronome but I
can customize my views
so to customize your view you just go to
customization edit customization and the
reason that metronome’s not on is
because it’s in an audio editing
um preset and you probably wouldn’t be
using a metronome while you’re editing
so I’m going to go to edit customization
go to transport
I’m going to turn my metronome back on
and let’s say I don’t care about some of
these other things I find them
bothersome
you shouldn’t necessarily find them
bothersome but you might so I’m going to
take those things away like I can even
take away record time
the takeaway sample rate already
I don’t need I don’t need to have that
up there because I know what I set it to
so you can make it a lot less busy if
you really want to and my metronome is
back
so closing that and that’s going to be
called my user defined for it
automatically saves them so I have
another user defined right there there’s
complete that’s going to have everything
minimal it’s going to have almost
nothing
and then basic which will have the
metronome in there
so let me record a little bit of
something I’m going to grab my music man
Cutlass HT and I want to show you a few
other features that some are new to uh
Studio One
and some aren’t actually I don’t know if
this feature is new I just discovered it
while I was messing with a lot of these
other things I’ll be right back so my
guitar is plugged in hit record
[Music]
it’s a little loud
and I can tune and you can see there’s a
little tuner
right in the channel strip there
[Music]
all right
so I’m going to go ahead and record a
little something
[Music]
thank you
[Music]
okay so that is a little guitar part
move that around
turn it off and shrink it back
I’m going to go over here and make the
levels a little bit more apparent and
I’m going to unplug this guitar
and put it back down so
there are some new things in
this little hamburger-esque menu called
Global track visibility
markers are not new
there are cords and a ranger as well as
lyrics and video I’m gonna go to a
ranger
and I’m going to create
two parts
of the song I’m going to go over here
I’m going to rename them
so this is the chorus I started with the
chorus and then I had the verse so now
not only can I easily jump between
different parts of the song
I can also make them a color
to make it more visually interesting or
easier to understand
so let’s say I shouldn’t have started
with the chorus I should start with the
verse
you can just
swap them so let’s hear how that sounds
[Music]
obviously not the smoothest thing in the
world
uh I didn’t really expect it to be but
you get the gist I can move them back
or I can just completely move them
around
if I decided I want the verse to
actually happen twice
I can do that
I can bring the chorus back
and um
I can see how that transition sounds
this is more helpful I think for when
you’re arranging than uh necessarily
recording
you do have to get it quite smooth uh so
if I just done better it wouldn’t sound
so weird but I was doing it pretty
quickly
that was pretty smooth
so I’m actually going to put the chorus
right between the verses
and I’m going to add lyrics that’s a new
feature
again this one’s only available in
professional so to add lyrics
you just click and you’re right
we can go in and put in all of the
lyrics here you can edit them like that
and you can see that they are associated
with
those measures the way I use will will
end up using lyrics in Studio One six is
for cues primarily you can use them in
performances which I’m sure is extremely
helpful but as a guitarist in a band
who’s not also the singer I rely on the
singer’s vocal cues probably more than I
should
so adding those little vocal cues right
here
even if it’s not all the lyrics it’s
going to help me a lot as will using
this arranger tool
um by adding those parts counting it out
adding them and then going into
recording it lessens the chance of me
stopping a section early or hanging on
that section for too long there are a
lot of songs out there where the verses
the first verse is twice as long as the
second verse the second chorus is twice
as long as the first chorus
um so the arranger tool can make it easy
for you to know that and just drop those
different parts in there and then if
like you have certain flourishes in
certain sections
it makes it kind of easier to get those
cues and you can just use them to write
cues as well there’s no reason they have
to be just lyrics though that is what
they were intended for
let’s get back into the personalization
element of Studio 6. it’s going to be
the theme of of this video
I really like that guitar sound and I
want to make sure that I can
replicate that di guitar sound
no matter what track I’m working in so
how do I do that I right click on the
track
I go down here into store track preset
and I name it Buzz guitar and I can add
it to a subfolder I’m going to add it to
my go to dis
there we go
but let’s say I made this guitar track
um this dirty one and now I want to have
a clean one I could do that as well I
can go up here to add track audio
say guitar track two
and then I can load track presets there
are a few things you can do you can just
have an fx chain like this like one of
their defaults or presets I should say
um
I have created that preset I have a few
other presets as well
let’s just do my look at my go to Di’s
and my di guitar here it’s just going to
be a cleaner guitar
so I can copy
go back to the bottom highlight that
paste it in
and let’s solo it
[Music]
same guitar part
different sound just because I change up
the DI
which is pretty pretty pretty cool
something else that’s kind of fun that I
didn’t mention before is now you have
these cute little icons that you could
put in for different tracks instead of
just naming them I actually think that’s
really fun it’s not a big thing but it’s
a cute thing let’s go look at one other
thing there’s one thing on the home page
I didn’t show you before and it’s not
just available on the home page it’s
available in
um project view as well or record now
example View
but I’m going to go to the homepage for
a second I’m going to open up the song
that you might have heard before if
you’ve seen some of my other videos
but you can click up here
and seamlessly
bounce between the different songs you
have open and if I open a another one
let’s just say this example track this
demo track that they have it might take
a second to load there are a lot of
plugins on this one
so I’m not going to use their material
without their permission but I am just
going to show you that if you have three
songs open or more you select them that
way if you only have two songs open you
just click that button up here to toggle
between them
so this is another example of a song
where I have put lyrics I’ve also put
the arranger you can hide any of those
views at any time
the last thing I want to talk about is
being able to add a video track
so that’s brand new
um I’ve actually already added the video
into this example
under the over the guitar solo but again
this is probably most helpful for people
who are writing for film and video
and to see the video
you just navigate to where that starts
hit the video icon and hit play
you can change the size of this
you can move it to another window
and you open and close it by hitting
that video icon or clicking on the video
you can have as many Clips as you’d like
in that video editor I think it’s going
to be helpful with my podcast being able
to drop the video and audio files in
I’ll be able to drop my podcast in the
video with the audio separately and I
can have more control over making
smaller adjustments to the audio versus
what I have in like a Premiere Pro
it’s probably not going to completely
diminish my need for Premiere Pro for
other things like color correction but
for basic stuff I don’t do a lot of that
kind of thing on the video podcast so
it’s not going to be a huge deal but
that’s the bulk of what I wanted to show
you overall I think Studio One six is a
great Next Step In Studio One it is
definitely more customizable
personalizable than other versions being
able to save not just
a complete song tip templates but
individual track preferences is going to
really speed up the process I think for
a lot of people having those views where
you just see what you want is going to
really get rid of a lot of the Clutter
for things that you don’t necessarily
use like midi and the smart templates
are honestly great I was playing around
with the Beats template I would not have
known where to start on making beats but
that template made it really really
really easy so again check it out at
Studio One six if you’re interested in
picking this up for yourself I implore
you to use my affiliate Link in the
video description it’s a great way for
you to support this channel doing things
you’re probably going to do anyway so it
costs you no extra money I get a small
percentage of that sale shared with me
and um I really appreciate it my
favorite way to support the channel is
to like comment and subscribe and tell
your favorite Brands about us so for
everyone out there thanks for watching
thanks for understanding I hope this was
helpful and until next time my name is
Emily goodbye
