Soyuz Launcher Demo and Review on Vocals and Acoustic Guitar

So, what exactly is the Soyuz Launcher? If you’re like me, you saw a TON of ads for this little brick on social, but is it really worth $200?

Note about editing in post: I literally only increased the volume for the takes where I wasn’t using the Launcher. I did absolutely nothing else to the microphones, and didn’t touch the Launcher audio in post. I did remove noise from the parts of the video where my voice is picked up primarily by a lav mic, and added some volume there as well.

Soyuz Launcher Demo and Review

Welcome to get offset. My name is Emily and I’m here today with this little box. You’ve probably seen it in a ton of Facebook and Instagram. Add a, this is the Soyuz analog launcher, handmade and Russia. And it’s essentially a little cloud lifter. The preamp. I’m not exactly sure. Like what console or anything.

[00:00:25] This is based on. It’s not transparent. But it sounds really cool if you listen to, to the podcast the past couple of weeks, both my cohost, Andrew, and I use this too to, um, make our vocals sound a lot better. Uh, it’s enabled me to. Go from having my, my little focus right interface, uh, to having a really good sound with an essence 57 or a PG 58, both Shure microphones.

[00:00:53] Um, so this is really an interesting device. It runs on Phantom power. So basically you plug your microphone into this, you plug this into your interface and then you enable your Phantom power. The Phantom power runs this, and you get a lot of, uh, A lot of increase in, in, in gain and your sound. Um, God, it’s just hard to describe, so I might as well just, uh, do some AB tests for you.

[00:01:23] So I’m going to do some tests, both on vocals. Uh, so I have my little SMPP seven over here. I’m going to talk into that a little bit. I’m going to sing into it. I have the focus right for, I, for, um, I’m going to do everything with the gain at about noon. So I’m going to run the essence 57 on vocals, at least acoustic guitar, maybe mandolin.

[00:01:52] If I can get to that, I’m going to have them all running with the gain at about noon. On the four by four, I’m also going to try the air setting on the floor, I for, uh, to see how that sounds different. And then I’m going to do it with a launcher. So, um, I’m really impressed with this little box personally, I don’t really want to, uh, you know, influence your judgment on how this sounds.

[00:02:19] I was sent this to do a review and then full disclosure. We bought one because Andrew and I both liked it so much and we couldn’t agree on who got to keep it. So. Uh, thanks for watching those of you who watched basically got us a nice little tech upgrade. So without further ado, I’m going to, um, just start with the talk and I guess, so I know that you don’t really saying into an S and 57.

[00:02:47] I know people do seem to prefer these as like instrument microphones. Um, I’m not a singer. If you’ve seen my mall demo, you know, I’m not a singer. I am not singer, but I will sing for you for this demo. This demonstration, I will say I should probably actually like pick a damn song. I’ve been living in Moscow.

[00:03:16] How have been living in this Snowden house, been staring out upon the wide of the world. I’ve been speaking with Gabriel, the man is a talker, but the stories he tells they will burn in your soul this much. I know. Alright, I’m going to turn on the air and I’ll be right back. Alright. And this is once again, me talking, I’m talking into this, uh, the game’s at noon.

[00:03:49] I’m not even getting a green halo very much. I don’t really want to turn the gain up a lot more than this. Cause I want it to be at the same level that I would have it for the Soyuz launcher. And I know exactly where that level is. I’m getting a, um, yeah, I’m not really getting much of a signal, so I’m, I would have to do probably quite a bit of posts to, uh, get that signal up there.

[00:04:17] I’m seeing my level kind of hovering and like the lower one third there. So ho for the singing, Natalie , I’ve been living in the snowed in house, not been stared out upon the white of the world have been speaking with Gabriel. The man is a talker, but the stories he tells. They will burn in your soul this much.

[00:04:49] I know. All right. So talking with the launcher, just looking at my levels over there, it’s a pretty enormous boost. I’m saying just like a nice little group, the green halo around the focus. Right. Which is what you’re looking for. Um, yeah. And occasionally it does seem to get into like the red territory and I’m sure that just holding it as noisier.

[00:05:14] I probably should have kept this on the tripod and I’m going to sing and I’m probably gonna pop, but we’ll figure it out. Right. All right. Having living in Moscow, Moscow have been living in the Snowden house NAB and staring out upon the wide of Lu world have been speaking Wiki. Real man is a Tucker, but the stories he tell us.

[00:05:42] They will burn and your soul this much. I know. All right. So I have turned off the air. This is just the essence, 57 as it is. Let’s get you over here to where you ought to be. I’m not a pro at miking acoustic guitars. And if you’re curious, it’s not a gift and hummingbird, this is some weird lawsuit era.

[00:06:09] Guitar. It’s like a parlor sized acoustic guitar with, um, the hummingbird look, which appeals to me. Alright. I’m not that again, not a micro microphone pro, so let’s do some gentle finger picking.

[00:06:45] alright.

[00:07:13] That’s just some strumming.

[00:08:09] maybe something a little bit more intricate with a guitar pick.

[00:09:15] Nice. Maybe just like funky for fun.

[00:09:47] So, uh, what’d you think, could you tell the difference? I did do some posts. I did some noise removal just in general because I have a very noisy room and a matter, what I use is going to, it’s going to pick up that noise. I, um, I don’t know if I mentioned this, but during the intro, I used a lav mic that I’m wearing, just so that there wasn’t any, um, I really actually should unplug the lab mic.

[00:10:19] I use a lab Mike to get a better sound and also, so that it wouldn’t really get you used to hearing it, the, the microphone in any, in any sort of way. I don’t know if that was like the best way to do it, but it’s the way I did it. So I do my best generally speaking, but I’m doing this post with the launcher on an S and 57.

[00:10:45] Um, trick the video description. I will leave detailed notes about any, any editing I did impose. I try to, I’ll try to keep it super duper minimal. Um, At most I am. I am already like, I know I’m probably going to have to do some audio just to make things audible with where the, um, the game was set. Cause I really wanted to provide a baseline, but now I just don’t think that anything that I did was loud enough for y’all to hear me.

[00:11:19] And that’s kind of, that’s kind of a problem, right? Right. That’s the problem with running a condenser microphone directly into a focus, right? Scarlet or any other kind of interface without some sort of like this situation, but the launcher I’m so happy with it. I, I, man, like you just saw the ad, you see ads for something everywhere and you think there’s no way that this can be good.

[00:11:45] Like, why are they spending so much money in ads, but. It’s really, really as a cool product. It sounds great. It’s like now it’s an, an essential part part of my rig and I would not have guessed that when I got it. It’s yeah, no cute little sits right next. I just literally always have it kind of there and ready to go whenever I need it.

[00:12:07] So I’m really, really super duper pleased with the launcher. Um, I, it took me a while to get this demo, but that doesn’t mean I didn’t like it. It just means I was so busy using it for other things that I just didn’t. Didn’t get around to doing a demo of it. I hope you like it. Um, another on their website, if you, if, if it’s on reverb.com or, uh, if there’s anything else you want to reverb.com.
