The ALBIE by BIG EAR pedals is a new wave dream machine for those who don’t like options paralysis. It features eight distinct modulation modes based off of the sounds of ’80s new wave.
And all it has is a blend knob.
That’s right, you can’t control the reverb decay, the flange rate, the chorus depth, but you’re not going to miss it. Each mode is finely tuned to sound excellent, and the Neil and Ultra-Neil modes can take you to a weird, beautiful sonic state of mind.
Guitar is Squier Paranormal Series Super-Sonic
Bass is Fender Player Series Mustang Bass
Guitar amp is Strymon Iridium, Round, B
Bass amp is Fender Rumble Studio 40

Hey, welcome to get offset. My name is Emily and I have the ALBIE, the newest pedal, I think first, first new effect, a lunch for, for BIG EAR pedals in a minute, like really new effect. Not like we’ve been making these on the side and we finally put them on our store or like, here’s a hot sauce that you’re going to love or the shake.
[00:00:24] I don’t know why I said that. They’ve actually done a lot of stuff the past year. Um, That I’ve enjoyed and love, but the ALBIE is a brand new pedal, uh, that is named in loving memory to their dearly departed cat Albert. His name was cat Albert, and it was their cat. Um, so let’s all have a moment of pause for cat Albert.
[00:00:52] That was beautiful. I was thinking back about cat Albert I’ve met cat Albert. He was it. It’s a good cat. Um, and grant and Karen from bigger pedals are great people and I’m so excited to have this pedal with them. This is new wave in a box. And if you were like me in middle school, cool. Young kind of like, I want to be punk rock or you probably thought new wave was lame.
[00:01:17] And then as an adult, I realized I was wrong. The cars are dope. Depeche mode is great. Uh, the care awesome. And even Prince was inspired by a lot of new wave. So this is essentially really it’s a one knob pedal because one of these knobs just cycles through the settings and one controls the mix. Um, last time I talked to grant about it.
[00:01:44] He said he only wanted the mix to go up to 50%. I think it goes a little beyond that, but the recent, he told me he was doing that was because. This is based on what the folks in the eighties could do. And if they were getting like chorus via their JC one, their role in JC one 20 that didn’t get a hundred percent wet.
[00:02:04] So he wanted to kind of put the same parameters on this, which I really, really respect and appreciate. And also this is the collaboration with Neil, from DR. scientists. And, uh, there’s something a little special called Neil mode, and I’m going to show you how Neil mode works really quickly. So Neil Neil mode essentially ramps up the effects setting as you’re playing, but to access meal mode.
[00:02:28] Um, all you have to do is hold down the pedal, but if you want Neal mode to be in like more of a latching setting is not making any sense. It will, it will make sense. I friggin promise, but you want to hold down. While you’re plugging in and you see it does this really fun thing and turns on. And really, I just, cause I wanted to show you that, that particular little trick, cause it blew my blew my little mind the first time I saw it.
[00:02:57] Yes. That wavelength the nightclub. Um, but uh, for the most part, just normally powering up the ALBIE. You just plug it in. It still does this fun little. Do Hickey, which is really neat. I remember saying that back last September when I visited them in Nashville. Um, and then you just cycle through and you adjust your, um, your mix.
[00:03:19] So it’s a great pedal for the kind of person who gets options, paralysis, not a ton of knobs to turn, uh, Neil and the folks at big ear did a lot to kind of make sure everything is voiced well, so you can trust them. I do. I’m really pleased with this pedal and I can’t wait to play it. Do I have to wait any longer to play it?
[00:03:40] No. Uh, enjoy the rest of the demo. Welcome back. I’m here with my Squire paranormal series supersonic with Lawler, Imperial humbuckers and them set the single coil I actually checked and I must strive in a redeem round B and I think I misspoke on something. So I mentioned Neil Moe named for Neil of doctors, scientists, where things can go.
[00:04:05] Especially like heavy and warpy because, uh, grant really did want there to be limitations on the parameters of this pedal that are more accurate to the eighties. Um, that Neal node can be accessed on any of these settings by holding down the foot, switch for momentary latching. And if you hold down the foot switch while powering on the pedal, that’s what triggers ultra Neal mode.
[00:04:31] Which means you can just hit that once or hold it down for one second and you don’t have to keep holding it down for, um, the Neal mode. So first I’m just going to run through everything on a regular mode when I’ll, and I’ll be hitting the Neal mode, uh, kind of, as I can. And then I’ll do everything on the ultra Neal mode.
[00:04:54] They’re only settings, only the max snub. So it shouldn’t be too much of like a complex thing to do. Um, I hope. Alright, here’s my dry sound.
[00:06:00] Neil mode kick in. It’s really cool. I’m a fan.
[00:06:47] It’s like on the verge of like kind of self oscillating. It’s very tasteful. It’s not too crazy.
[00:08:46] I find they’re often a little surprises in the Neal mode that I really am meant to.
[00:10:45] I love how each Neil mode is so different. Yeah.
[00:11:38] Mmm.
[00:12:41] Now I’m going to go back to the beginning. I’m going to plug the ALBIE back in. I’m going to try to do the ultra Neal nut thing.
[00:14:39] I hope Wendy, Melvoin never watches face.
[00:15:44] All right. Well, that’s a, an extended look at the ALBIE on guitar. And I look at the Neil ultra Neil mode and the regular Neil note, which, uh, are both really cool. Um, I think regular Neil mode is enough for me, but I get, if you want to go to ultra Neil mode and you know me. I love pedals when they go too damn far.
[00:16:09] Cause if they’re not going too far, they’re not going too far. If they’re not going too far, they’re not going far enough. Yeah. Great. Don’t worry. Um, I’m also gonna play this on the base because why the hell wouldn’t I I’ll be playing my vendor player series Mustang bass through my, uh, fender rumbles studio 40.
[00:16:31] So stick around for that. I’ll see it a bit.
[00:17:33] yeah.
[00:18:07] Huh?
[00:18:23] that’s really smart. A nice little addition. I like that. Okay.
[00:18:47] A little bit flanger on there.
[00:19:47] even not scientists, uh, to send you a space and it’s a big ears for letting that happen.
[00:20:27] I love this pedal.
[00:21:40] well, that was a nice little surprise. So that’s just like a really quick look at the ALBIE. I say really quick. This is not a short video though. Many of my videos were not short. I’ve been waiting so long for this pedal to be really, and I am not disappointed. This is really, this is really what okay.
[00:22:04] Promised. And it is new wave in a box. I don’t even know what my favorite setting is.
