This week, Emily and Joan talk about a surprise drop from Fender—the Gold Foil Jazzmaster (available in Shoreline Gold and Candy Apple Burst). It’s a Teisco-inspired Jazzmaster that we’re pretty wild about. We also discuss the Rainger FX Minibar and the new FloraVolt pedal by Mattoverse.
The two then touch on a recent story in the news: John Fogerty of CCR reclaimed his publishing rights after 50 years. This is the man who was sued for sounding too much like himself. There also may be talk of the Gaye Estate suing people.

crimesofparis
Welcome to get offset. My name is Emily and I did you see that fender kind of surprise released a new jazz master.
00:14.26
Joan of Heart
And I’m Joan of Hark.
00:20.97
Joan of Heart
Yes, and I am really like I am trying not to cheat on my current jazz master looking at it.
00:28.91
crimesofparis
it’s it’s interesting let’s let’s talk about some of the more interesting features. It has the same block inlays that the american vintage 2 series has which is super neat. Um, the headstock is is is black which for like a but on the burst one at least I don’t know if there are other colors. So.
00:36.32
Joan of Heart
And.
00:46.89
crimesofparis
It’s kind of like a tobaccoesque burst. It’s more like a 2 color than a tricolor um and then the headstock is like the same as an outer color but there are a few things that really make it super unique for jazz masters. Um, the thing I notice first is ah like what most people know is first. The gold foil. Hiccups. There are 3 gold foil pickups on this jazz master which that with the color and the fact that it uses a bigsby and kind of a Jags style pickup switching system. This is this is a the fender tysco that’s so rad.
01:16.21
Joan of Heart
Yes.
01:24.39
Joan of Heart
This is crazy like yeah I love this? Yeah, it were again with the 3 pickups again. It reminds me of obviously like my ah st vincent like with the 3 pickups I mean and the jaguwarar switches right there and I’m like what is this is amazing I know bigsby. Oh yes, yes.
01:26.00
crimesofparis
Yeah, are.
01:39.37
crimesofparis
When I So when I saw it I assumed it was a base six because of the switching system. But then there’s only that I yeah I am like in the bigsby though and it looks like it is Royal Ah roller a roller bridge. Yeah, a roller bridge like on a mustang I think.
01:41.28
Joan of Heart
Um, of course.
01:55.46
Joan of Heart
Yep, that’s what I’m seeing too.
01:57.11
crimesofparis
It’s really really hot I think that I think that this people are going to buy this one and the price is only it’s only fourteen hundred bucks
02:05.26
Joan of Heart
Yeah I mean that’s similar to the price of when I bought my ah you know America pro emtro two it that was bret around the price that time so this is in the market for that kind of yeah, it’s perfect. Yeah.
02:15.91
crimesofparis
Yeah, I’m really curious what the quality control is on it but I hate to say this but almost because we know they’ve had QC issues giving somebody like the aesthetic and vibe of like a tyisco that you know is going to have problems.
02:23.18
Joan of Heart
Yeah, please know.
02:31.93
crimesofparis
I Think that psychologically people might be more forgiving of some of those wonky elements.
02:34.55
Joan of Heart
Know well I mean also the fact I guess a little bit more forgiving because again, it’s not like a 272400 guitar with those key c issues. Not that that takes away from. Yeah.
02:45.40
crimesofparis
I maintain I maintain a thousand dollar guitar should come with 0 issues.
02:50.60
Joan of Heart
I Know it should still. That’s what I was going to say it still should not come with those issues. But yeah, it’d be. It’s a bigger issue when it’s a lot higher a price tag I mean it’s I mean even the color itself like I usually like either blue guitars or there’s red or purple.
02:53.73
crimesofparis
Now now.
03:06.72
Joan of Heart
And yeah, this is this is in dangerous territory because I also like red guitar. So and the course because the headstock is like you know, black or like the tobacco outside color. Yeah, like that’s one is yeah.
03:14.76
crimesofparis
Know yeah, so if you’re watching the video version I have my ah and american ben sho series. There’s none of this nice like Brown and it it goes straight from this kind of red along the outside so that whole body is like this.
03:31.40
Joan of Heart
Him.
03:32.20
crimesofparis
Red color. It’s a dual tones of a tritone has the same black around the edge. It’s it’s very very Sears guitar very tysco. It’s hot. You know.
03:44.56
Joan of Heart
I I Love this? Yeah oh no I Love it I was like I’m looking and it was like you know I can already be like um I’m making like painful noises over here because it’s so yeah, it’s so evil.
03:56.79
crimesofparis
What blows on mind is I haven’t it I was looking for it on the fender website and I I don’t see it. It doesn’t say it’s an exclusive to sweetwater. Um, yeah.
04:01.38
Joan of Heart
Is it only with sweetwater like some kind of like exclusive now. Okay Al the bigsby though.
04:14.34
crimesofparis
Yeah I’m I Just don’t see it anywhere.
04:16.98
Joan of Heart
Did someone let the cat out of the bag early. Yeah no.
04:21.74
crimesofparis
So I don’t know I’m not really fussed with it. Let’s see gold foil because over when you Google Gold Foiled Jazz master. You get the pickups um it if it’s an exclusive then that’s exciting I’m not seeing the words.
04:37.61
Joan of Heart
That’s wild. No I don’t I don’t either. So that’s I am just like you can’t see anywhere else. Oh oh and this fat. No um.
04:39.14
crimesofparis
Ah see I Want to search. Um, yeah I’m seeing the word I’m not I just searched the word exclusive I didn’t find it anywhere.
04:57.49
crimesofparis
Let’s go to shopping on Google pickups from Chicago music exchange I’m not seeing this guitar anywhere else on Google shopping so you know.
05:01.17
Joan of Heart
Can’t.
05:10.88
crimesofparis
Maybe it was supposed to come out tomorrow and it came out on a Sunday I guess we’ll find out I fender I do not apologize if I cover this before it was out um now so Scott um.
05:13.49
Joan of Heart
New I am surprise. Ah well we’re we’re we’re excited about it. So again, good. Good things, Good things I like that.
05:28.95
crimesofparis
Mahogany Body which is unique for jazz Masters Theyre not usually mahogany. They also usually have never really have gold foils unless it’s an aftermarket um thing and you know gold foils. They have their fans and they have their detractors I don’t think anybody originally bought gold foils because they like. Sought the sound but more that was what was in the guitars they could afford ah which you know is we always talk about this. We talk about this a lot. Um, just like ah restrictions breeding innovation and kind of defining sounds like oh it sounds that way because it had to.
05:47.78
Joan of Heart
Of course.
05:58.89
Joan of Heart
Mm.
06:04.80
crimesofparis
Umability enhancing Mustang Bridge be bigsby license b fifty vibrato. Um they say ah this is a sweetwater copy robust sixty s c profile vintage tall frets a nine Inch radius boast a high performance feel.
06:11.39
Joan of Heart
Um.
06:23.35
crimesofparis
Your typical tysco could only dream of so basically please stop buying old series guitars. Yeah so I mean low classic low output spark of Gold foil unrefined rock.
06:24.83
Joan of Heart
No.
06:42.90
crimesofparis
Ah, bla bla bla blah yeah the goldfield jazz masters neck to tours from the budget was an ultra high performance feel I’d be excited to try that um, see this one’s did it says 9 and trading since says 9.5 I’m going to guess it’s nine point. 5
06:53.64
Joan of Heart
Who. Yeah,, That’s what I’m seeing to yeah now that’s really nice.
07:00.99
crimesofparis
Just just what they make yeah Mustang Style Bridge yeah surfy flutter but with an increased break angle goes a long way to enhance sustain see I love that’s why I love my jazz master with a bigsby. Yeah.
07:15.63
Joan of Heart
So yeah.
07:19.92
crimesofparis
Ah I’m excited for this I really would like to try one out I doubt I get 1 um and I also don’t want to buy 1 particularly unless I can get if I get it if I get a.
07:26.84
Joan of Heart
Well yeah.
07:36.84
Joan of Heart
Discount I would I would like to see one in store at least to try I mean as far as like guitars in general price range wise like I would like too. But yeah, it’s just not not feasible.
07:37.24
crimesofparis
I get discount I’d probably consider it let me.
07:48.98
crimesofparis
Yeah.
07:53.75
Joan of Heart
Ah, this year so I mean I mean at some point maybe a used one or who knows I mean but that that really looks nice. That’s that’s something I’d be really curious and interested in because again for me since I’ve finally had an experience woulda bigsby with my epiphone.
07:59.22
crimesofparis
Now.
08:10.80
Joan of Heart
I’ve thought about man if like I got a jaguar at some point where I got another jazz master that was completely different. Oh I Probably want to put a bigsby on it as like because I like the way the you know obviously the broaddo arm is and now just looking at this as like no one in the universe should be listening to my my inner thoughts.
08:21.91
crimesofparis
And.
08:27.63
crimesofparis
Ha Ha ha.
08:30.24
Joan of Heart
And torturing me with making these kind of guitars that are exactly kind of what I was looking for. Ah.
08:36.59
crimesofparis
Yeah I get I get that feeling sometimes I’m going to see oh there’s also the one in Gold I think I like the gold but I would probably get it different I would I would do the gold with like a mint guard.
08:42.37
Joan of Heart
Ah.
08:48.18
Joan of Heart
No the candy Apple yeah, that’s.
08:55.74
crimesofparis
Ah, because I have a thing for for that kind of a acidtic I don’t like that I don’t love the tort on the gold I like the gold The gold has a matching headstock though I don’t love that.
09:05.00
Joan of Heart
Trying to see yeah for me gold doesn’t match my complexion so I usually stay away from gold things which I’m okay I guess with the pickups you know, obviously that is what they are um, but yeah I would probably even on the red one. The candy Apple burst.
09:15.65
crimesofparis
Let’s.
09:22.97
Joan of Heart
I would probably at some point change the pick card to be somewhat of a standout from that or maybe I’d keep it I don’t know or maybe the witch hat side would change like there’s little things that I would personalize much like I did my own jazz master. But right off the bat again if I like the color that’s already a good start and the headstock is about the same color as the outer. Paint like I think that’s perfect that they’re going into that route of having the headstocks kind of match the color of the body in some way.
09:50.16
crimesofparis
Yeah for for the burst I I think the tor is fine I think I would prefer um andize gold wouldn’t look good. There would be no contrast between the pickups which would look bad I think um I would do I just would I would do like a different.
09:59.38
Joan of Heart
No yeah, that would.
10:07.12
crimesofparis
Tort like um, the the ah like the the material that sunglasses and like rayn makes glasses out of I Forget what? that’s called. It’s flammable and very hard to find it states. Yeah, yeah, it’s like an acetate or something I don’t know but there are ways to kind of like fudge it and people do that.
10:07.71
Joan of Heart
Um, and.
10:15.66
Joan of Heart
Oh God trying to think oh I get through or or even or even somewhat maybe of an acrylic.
10:26.28
crimesofparis
With success.
10:30.99
Joan of Heart
Light from the inside or a mirror or just something that is not like the tort but different so different ideas or an etched one. Um, yeah, there’s many ideas. Yeah, who maybe like a smoke.
10:35.10
crimesofparis
How.
10:41.62
crimesofparis
I Like a darker tort I think um and then the gold one I would do I would do the mint garden and that’s pretty much all I would change about it is I you know but I like.
10:49.83
Joan of Heart
Acrylic like a smoked. Yeah, maybe yeah smoke see through or a smoke Chrome would be nice. You I think you have is that the only one you have I think you have a few don’t you is that the only gold one. Okay.
10:56.20
crimesofparis
I like Gold guitars as I hold up mine. Um.
11:03.61
crimesofparis
That’s my only smell like gold one. Yeah yep I would like another gold telecaster. The reason I don’t want to spend $1400 on this is because I’m going have other people make me guitars in the near future i’m.
11:16.35
Joan of Heart
Um, of course. Yeah, no, no, no yes.
11:18.62
crimesofparis
I Don’t want to spoil any of it. But I think I’ve mentioned it before but it’s fine. Um, it is in the future. So I still have time to say it but like I have deposits on guitars and I’m probably going to try to put another one down and like Marchrch so keep going keep making things. Ah.
11:29.83
Joan of Heart
Um, nice.
11:38.91
crimesofparis
Keep getting things that are made by people. Um, yeah.
11:41.40
Joan of Heart
Yeah, that’s that’s kind of the same vein I think it’s much as I do like this one I think the next guitar I’d actually like would be someone that I would you know ah work with them to make.
11:52.50
crimesofparis
Commission. Um.
11:54.19
Joan of Heart
Yeah, a guitar that I’d actually wanted it to be kind of like working in ta with each other versus something that is just bought that fender made something a little bit more intimate and personal of what I want sound wise I think that’ll be my next one.
12:05.93
crimesofparis
Yeah, yeah, um I get you on that one speaking of like ah made guitars like the one that Ryan for dimmos of the dark had made from illuminati guitars.
12:09.83
Joan of Heart
And.
12:16.79
Joan of Heart
Oh my God yes.
12:20.56
crimesofparis
It’s Gotley’s a little elie. It’s like acrylic it. It’s got little led ds and I’m like fuck that’s smart god now if now if I do it. He’ll think I’m just copying him so she yeah for sure.
12:21.79
Joan of Heart
Yes, oh it’s so good. Yes, Oh yeah, no, but just don’t do it yellow and just do another body shape. Yeah, now. It’s so good though to see that that the. I’m not even a yellow fan but just like seeing it in the course with the glow kind of like a like is a purple kind of glow with it. No just like all that so fucking Rad I Love that shit like ah yes.
12:44.74
crimesofparis
Yeah, the purple glow um directly into my veins. Um, well ah, we’re the get offset podcast and I would like to implore you to like comment subscribe and get notifications. There’s a lot of other content on this page I do gear demos. 13:29.23
Joan of Heart
Him.
13:36.38
crimesofparis
For as little as $5 a month you get access to our exclusive discord server. It means that is to say it’s not going to be an overwhelming discord server. It’s very manageable. Ah, personally like I get into a lot of I’m in a lot of servers and I just have to mute them all and then just look at them when I can.
13:44.70
Joan of Heart
Um, you know.
13:52.76
Joan of Heart
Yeah I’m I’m in quite a few too and even for me right now with like the way with making Demos myself. Ah for my channel pedal playhouse and just also doing content on other social medias too. It’s very hard to be as. Active as I was previously in all of these discords and of course I Love everyone that I talked to but it’s so hard to like be present everywhere to the same degree. But yeah I’m in quite a few.
14:08.39
crimesofparis
Then.
14:16.54
crimesofparis
Yeah, yeah, that is there’s only so much of a person to go around and that’s that that’s the truth. Um, as a stupid idea I’m not going to do it ah at no and the 10
14:20.68
Joan of Heart
Yeah, but.
14:29.42
Joan of Heart
Yeah in her Monologue Don’t do it. Don’t do it. Ah yeah, you.
14:33.88
crimesofparis
Dollar level or above I’ll give you my pokemon go trainer code and we can be friends and I’ll send you presents there. We go that that’s that’s a good one I should add that. Um, so ah so I had.
14:45.64
Joan of Heart
Tear tear $10 cocommon go ah oh ya I look like.
14:51.79
crimesofparis
Fun night last night Mike Adams aka pushing aka Michael James Adams invited me to a little birthday celebration up a little bit north of where I am at a brewery and he brought a little guitar rig and I was surprised to see it I thought we’re just going be hanging out.
15:04.97
Joan of Heart
Oh nice.
15:08.41
crimesofparis
Ah, but basically it was just the ranger fx mini bar pedal and we were at a um, ah brewery so we had some we got kind of so he had like the little like um, squeezy things I forgot they call him the dropper proper things. So ah, we.
15:12.17
Joan of Heart
Um, ah oh yeah, start Poor met scientist. Yeah I know the dropper. Yeah, the dropper. Yeah, that’s awesome.
15:27.65
crimesofparis
Did a whole thing where we had different beers with different apbs. We had water they had hand sanitizers sitting around so we did that they had like a root beer in cider and we like took everyone the vlog guitars there obviously took like notes about like tasting slash sounding notes.
15:31.26
Joan of Heart
Ah.
15:39.35
Joan of Heart
Um, oh I Love this.
15:45.25
crimesofparis
It was really it was really fun and just like how different things sound like hand sanitizer kind of sounded like a big Moth water is just a great Baseline Ips sound fucking awful like they they weren’t all winners. They weren’t all winners root beer.
15:54.20
Joan of Heart
Chin.
15:59.27
Joan of Heart
Ah, taste too. Ah.
16:03.69
crimesofparis
Mixed with hand sanitizers sounded really good. We did some combinations too but that was that you know that pedal for having been out for a few years now that it’s still can surprise and delight people I’m still not sure how like functional it is to like.
16:04.24
Joan of Heart
Um, whoa. Nice.
16:16.39
Joan of Heart
Right.
16:22.54
crimesofparis
Always have but it’s It’s a fun experimentation type of thing and.
16:24.93
Joan of Heart
You know of course I think it’s pretty funny thinking about it in like the professional aspect and someone like ah someone you know setting up on stage and like the guy with the cars like yeah, make sure Michael Cocola is on stage for my ranger effects mini bar battle for when we go live. Yeah.
16:38.30
crimesofparis
Um, yeah, absolutely um I Just can’t imagine that but I’m sure people I’m sure there are people who do it but it’s just it’s It’s just so inventive and some time.
16:45.66
Joan of Heart
No I can’t either but it funny if yeah, oh just ah just to be kind of creative and weird in the middle of night is perfectly fine.
16:51.87
crimesofparis
That’s all you need is for it to be really inventive. Well yeah, that’s and that’s kind of where I am with ah the new madow verse pedal the floor of old so and this is going to come back but like the 1 thing about the ranger effects mini bar is that I just didn’t.
17:02.56
Joan of Heart
Yeah, yes.
17:11.17
crimesofparis
Feel like any of the the liquids you put in gave it a lot of sustain like it’s a very it it. It was sound very good on like Rhythm guitar. But like if you needed a law sustain for like shredty stuff. It didn’t really work and I’m not quite sure why and I’m curious if if anyone knows the science behind that.
17:16.30
Joan of Heart
Ah.
17:21.31
Joan of Heart
Yeah, not there? yeah.
17:29.56
Joan of Heart
What? okay.
17:30.44
crimesofparis
Um, drop it in the comments. But I was reading about madow verse I believe Madow versus based out of Wisconsin this guy just always does really inventive stuff. Ah I um he one might one of my favorites of his is the trimtortion. It’s a tremolo and fuzz puddle like which isn’t.
17:50.29
Joan of Heart
Not yeah.
17:50.34
crimesofparis
As novel now as it was it felt more novel than but I still think it’s a great sounding pedal and I’m a big fan. Um, but this floor Revolt is an overdry that’s powered by fruits and vegetables specifically fruits and vegetables. Um, yeah, so you basically.
18:05.38
Joan of Heart
That’s wild.
18:09.74
crimesofparis
Shove a piece of fruit or vegetables into this little like thing and you play and there there are control. There are a few controls on the side. Um, let me see what those are yeah, it’s a gain knob and a base roll off which from the ranger effects mini bar that was the 1 thing we really felt.
18:19.79
Joan of Heart
You know it.
18:27.26
Joan of Heart
Um, yeah.
18:28.93
crimesofparis
Was critically lacking with a lot of the liquids was that there was no high end. It was like all kind of low to low meds. It felt like yeah.
18:37.90
Joan of Heart
Okay, um, but but still thinking about it. Yeah, you see that ah old banana that you could make banana bread out of forget the banana bread go put a effect spel for voltage to give you distorted sounds.
18:52.88
crimesofparis
Yeah, so there are silver and copper pegs. So then it basically goes through and connects. So I guess it makes it like um that makes it replace like the clipping diode I guess or some sort of diet which is how the ranger effects works at least.
18:57.73
Joan of Heart
It’s like a battery. Yeah um when I was looking at it I when I was reading it I was wondering if it was kind of. Ah, tapping into that whole thing with certain distortions when you have certain voltages or batteries depending on if the battery obviously has a higher voltage or the battery is going bad then there’s a different frequency. It gets out of it versus yeah just being plugged in fried psu A piece B is you? yes.
19:16.88
crimesofparis
Yeah, that could be it. Um.
19:26.53
crimesofparis
He he does talk about like there being voltage limitations and quote most fruits and vegetables. So that means the volume is going to be. It’s never it’s never going to be like that loud. So that’s the it’s going to be unity are slightly above. Um.
19:29.17
Joan of Heart
Yeah.
19:36.24
Joan of Heart
Like I think Unity gain or just past. Yeah.
19:44.34
crimesofparis
I Would really love to try this. But I know I’d have to buy it. Ah yeah I’m I’m really curious about it and obviously this is absolutely not something you would take on on stage because that would be mental.
19:46.67
Joan of Heart
Um, yes, yeah, it’s so funny though.
19:56.31
Joan of Heart
Um, no I was just about to say.
20:02.55
crimesofparis
You need to get a new Apple every few days like your Apple’s like rotting and I could so oh yeah.
20:06.41
Joan of Heart
You you know I could see Jack white stage like go got the oranges. Yeah, it’s gonna be a three r gay. Yeah for this song an orange for that song. Yeah I’m going to need a ah 5 day old banana hangs.
20:19.77
crimesofparis
Yeah I mean it’s it’s definitely it’s it’s one of those things that’s like definitely fun, but obviously obviously not practical and I don’t think anyone’s really it’s only a hundred and fifty bucks guys
20:23.80
Joan of Heart
Um, yeah, but not practical. Ah well that’s no I know. But again when I was reading it myself and thinking about yeah if you want a particular sound. That banana that you got all this sounds great and then like the next banana or like Apple or whatever you put on is a different shape different density. It’s always going to be different so you’re not going to get the same kind of sound. So yeah, not not predictable and of course once that.
20:50.18
crimesofparis
I’m yeah.
20:57.71
Joan of Heart
You know fruit goes bad like there goes your sound. Um, yeah.
20:59.17
crimesofparis
I Mean yeah I mean I wonder about literally about that like like like does does the density or age How does that affect how does that affect the sound. Yeah.
21:11.70
Joan of Heart
How does that affect the tone and the sound of it. Yeah, that’s but what was my question well was reading it too. And yeah.
21:18.20
crimesofparis
But he loves he’s he loves. He’s on practical pedals I mean he has the solar sound which uses a light source to control the amount they control the whole pedal I Think let me let me pull this open. It’s solar powered elect effect pedal.
21:28.51
Joan of Heart
I Love ldrs. Yeah.
21:32.80
crimesofparis
Ah, consisting of a simple transistor based gain circuit has been finally tuned to take full advantage of the low current and voltage provided by the solar panel. So I mean yeah, this is just kind of like you get what you get and I think there’s something very fun and exciting about that. Um I can imagine like.
21:47.60
Joan of Heart
Um, yes.
21:51.37
crimesofparis
Adjusting? Um, like like seeing how shroves affect things is like you I did that with the the bookworm effects um to David Foster walls would you we talked about thousand times because it’s just so fucking. Cool um, but I was like okay lights on lights off lights on lights off flashlight. Yeah, right there handy it’s a great pedal.
22:00.56
Joan of Heart
Me Oh it’s yes.
22:11.30
crimesofparis
Um, and I love it a lot so I’m he Brian Sprat brag yeah, like move my brain just stopped working mid name.
22:11.34
Joan of Heart
Yes, it’s it’s yeah, it’s it has a special place in my heart. Thank you Brian Spragged it’s okay that happens to me too. My brain is grape then my mouth goes dumb and I was like thanks. Thanks, you just made me feel awkward.
22:33.00
crimesofparis
I’m not even sure my brain was working. There was just like my I only I don’t think any part I me was working there if you’re wondering what I’m doing I’m buying a floor volt.
22:43.32
Joan of Heart
Um, you’re in the process of making it a reality Click click.
22:46.42
crimesofparis
Pay now. Ah yeah yeah, I’m stoked. Ah, that’s that’s gonna be really cool. Um, he has a yeah I don’t think it’ll break the internet but.
22:52.61
Joan of Heart
Well now we’ll know about the density and everything I Really want to Know. No, but.
23:02.77
crimesofparis
I’ll have fun doing it I’m sure I’ll have to go to the grocery store leave suggestions in the comments on the Youtube video of what fruits and vegetables you want to see me plug in to the floraolt and if you’re in the chat right now tell me right now.
23:06.66
Joan of Heart
What to get? yeah.
23:17.85
crimesofparis
And if you super chat us I will guarantee t I’ll get to yours. Um, if I can find it please don’t ask for anything I can’t find in Seattle in the winter.
23:19.54
Joan of Heart
Use that? Yes, oh yeah, yeah, if if yeah if if you’re or where I live. She’s definitely not going to have like mangoes and things like that don’t write things that you have mangoes even in winter even in winter. Okay.
23:32.34
crimesofparis
But we have mangoes we have meagas in a grocery store. Yeah, probably everything’s available not could be not from the fruit stand but from the Qfc probably I’ll do an avocado even if someone pays me not to do that to an avocado.
23:39.43
Joan of Heart
All right? all right? All right.
23:49.60
Joan of Heart
Ah, no Gu guacamole. Oh yes, try other things besides fruit and vegetables too Now I’m curious of like what can you put on it.
23:51.30
crimesofparis
Yes I just imagine just like putting clumps of something I Wonder if you can I wonder I’m going to try things like bread.
24:05.84
Joan of Heart
Ah, it is a lie.
24:06.33
crimesofparis
Just like put my finger on top of the 2 and connect them. Yeah I think that’ll be fun. Um, and I’m excited to try it out. Yeah okay cool. Wow I didn’t it’s only had hundred fifty bucks you know I’ll just you know.
24:21.48
Joan of Heart
Ah, is my.
24:23.95
crimesofparis
Eat out less for a week and I’ll be fine drink Yes I mean I’ll already have more fruits and vegetables. So I’ll just cook with them I guess try some proteins. Ah.
24:26.39
Joan of Heart
Um, well, you’re getting the fruits and vegetables I mean.
24:38.80
Joan of Heart
Not.
24:39.91
crimesofparis
So um, this is a part of the show where we talk about what’s new and I don’t I don’t have a lot. Um I don’t think I do.
24:47.95
Joan of Heart
Um I have a few I guess things that are new I’m almost to the end of the storyboard writing I still have two modes left. There’s like you know six modes so I am basically by the last 2 of the marshmallow.
24:48.97
crimesofparis
Oh go for it.
24:57.13
crimesofparis
Um.
25:02.92
Joan of Heart
Um, I’ll probably do another pass just to make sure everything seems coherent and cohesive and then I will start recording the character’s voice which I’ll be excited about because I run that through the pedal this time because it’s it has octaves so it’ll be fun to do the character voice like that and I’ve also.
25:06.18
crimesofparis
My name.
25:17.33
crimesofparis
Yeah.
25:21.42
Joan of Heart
Ah, been able to have some fun with some ah ah mask audio ah electronic petals recently the parts garden um, which is really great. 2 fuzzes together blend together. It kind of creates some smooth overdrive. But what I’ve really loved.
25:28.62
crimesofparis
Man.
25:41.10
Joan of Heart
Recently come on come on my board. How much you can do all right? Yeah, of course yes of course because I say this because it kicked off my um 1981 d or v off the board. The reigning champion for many years the black math kicked off that pedal from my board.
25:44.10
crimesofparis
Ah, got taken off the board. A.
25:57.35
crimesofparis
Oh.
26:00.36
Joan of Heart
And it is amazing. It’s basically like the New York city ah era muff that Fran blanche was ah you know had her hand in the design and I have found that in the gossam muff ah that I did with Matt of ah blind panic devices. He is the cream puff for that which also is a fran effects pedal. So I am starting.
26:06.83
crimesofparis
Okay, um.
26:16.39
crimesofparis
Mm yes Fran I always wanted that pudal.
26:19.68
Joan of Heart
Discover that as far as fuzzes go I’m really picky and I’m just like I guess I like everything fran does with with fuzzes. Essentially I guess but yeah, the black math is so good. Yeah, not surprising at all and I’m not even trying to like play favorites but I just noticed that in the last couple petals that I fell in love with like.
26:29.34
crimesofparis
Fran’s a genius so it’s not surprising.
26:35.32
crimesofparis
Yeah.
26:38.93
Joan of Heart
Blackout is just incredible. It’s reallyrellied. It has great sustain I mean um and also with the you know obviously the switch that flips it down. Um, it can catch some breakup I have loved every amount of time that I’ve spent with it. So um, I’ll see you. What I can get into it this month as far as like some stuff on social media. Perhaps but yeah, that pedal has been a lot of fun and I’m really grateful obviously to get some time with it. But yeah, that’s so far. Yeah, man fact pedals as usual.
27:11.68
crimesofparis
Good. Yeah um I Guess if there’s anything new with me. It’s just some my wrist is is getting better I was playing guitar a little bit today. Ah this morning and stuff and um I guess friday.
27:16.53
Joan of Heart
Okay.
27:24.33
crimesofparis
Did a little bit too. So I’m hoping to get at least a video with like actual guitar playing but I’m I’m obviously really um, Rusty so I hope people are kind to to my rusty ass playing. Ah.
27:38.58
Joan of Heart
oh oh wait there was something ah the the mad cat the the what Jason with the pick guard that was new. Yeah.
27:48.99
crimesofparis
That is new but it’s out of reach so check out the picture of that on Instagram our friend and supporter of the Patreon Jason came by he made a pick guard. Ah we talked about this last summer and I’m really excited that I came together so I bought this tinner guitar.
28:02.52
Joan of Heart
And tear.
28:05.88
crimesofparis
Last summer that I’d had my eyes on locally for a while. Um, it’s obviously like a handmade guitar. There are things about it that are really like kind of advanced in terms of and like those women did a good job and some things where you’re like Wow, you kind of messed that one up didn’t you. Like they obviously drilled the bridge in the wrong spot and they didn’t even fill the holes which is kind of funny. Um,, there’s some glue ah globbed on the the fret board but it’s like you know it’s It’s a good little tender guitar and I always liked it because you know ah princes most.
28:24.50
Joan of Heart
Ah, guys all those.
28:37.74
crimesofparis
Famous guitar like not the cloud not the symbol guitar but like the 1 he played in purple rain. It’s a honer take on a telecaster. Um I think Hs Anderson now makes that but they’re like $5000 if you can find them. Ah.
28:53.88
Joan of Heart
To yeah.
28:56.43
crimesofparis
It’s just a really well-made guitar. Um, but this it’s it’s got kind of like a it looks like a flame make a maple top. It might not be it doesn’t look like it’s really got nice like a pattern to it. Ah, and then it has like that skunk stripe right down the middle. Um, which is like the prince guitar. It doesn’t have any binding ah that would be pretty advanced to do and it just has 1 random blade pickup just kind of like sideways. So. It’s like an interesting thing. Ah, but Jason yeah, he I guess got material.
29:20.43
Joan of Heart
No.
29:32.92
crimesofparis
Like it’s like the right kind of Tortoise Pattern Um, acetate I think is like the what the material typically is. But again, it’s very flammable and fragile and there are like shipping restrictions on it. So it’s it’s hard to work with also but he got.
29:44.20
Joan of Heart
Oh wow.
29:48.90
crimesofparis
Something that was similar made for acoustic guitars and we put it underneath a clear guard that he cut. So um, yeah, it’s it turned out perfectly if if I if I can be completely honest. Yeah.
29:51.93
Joan of Heart
Oh that’s cool.
30:00.38
Joan of Heart
Yeah, no, if if you go on yeah socials. You’ll see it gee obviously made a video of it and it looks so good and again, that’s why in the comments like I said it was when ah Jason did my. Ah, pick card for my base which you’ll see in my videos anytime I play my base that’s like Jason’s work that blue pick card because the story on my end goes I was trying to when I originally bought my sterling stingray short scale base. Um, there really wasn’t I bought it with the intention of switching out the pick card later because for me just white. Yeah I just have to have some accent or blue of course. Um because I love anything blue. Um, so it got to the point where on ebay someone say hey you know pick guards like you can have one for that you know sting Ray base so in the process of trying to get it from the seller. Um, they pretty much stiffed me and i.
30:33.54
crimesofparis
A.
30:51.19
Joan of Heart
Pretty much ah was left empty handed so Jason and a few other people from our get off set Discord kind of banded together to make it a happy ending so that I could have a blue pickard for my sterling stingray base and now again.
31:07.80
crimesofparis
That’s another reason to join the discord. Ah.
31:09.54
Joan of Heart
It is yeah these guys are great and it’s even before I was a host and then of at the same time that I got mine and put it on. Um, that’s when I saw you started to talk with Jason like so maybe we can talk about maybe doing something. Yeah, he does great work. He’s great guy.
31:15.21
crimesofparis
Ralph.
31:21.65
crimesofparis
Well he first he made one for my my g and l um might be a bener guitar because the original pick guard I didn’t it’s just it’s signed by Brooks and Don and then they like sprayed over it to make the it is so just one I don’t I don’t.
31:27.61
Joan of Heart
And.
31:33.85
Joan of Heart
Oh yeah.
31:39.36
crimesofparis
Don’t give a shit about Brooks and du like no offense that kicks Brooks and ronie du ah kicks love your wine but I just like I don’t want that I don’t want that and was so I wanted so he made a really nice meant one. He’s actually gonna make a new one for the ah you can’t see it. It’s blocked by the microphone.
31:41.31
Joan of Heart
Of course.
31:48.39
Joan of Heart
That’s not what I.
31:57.90
crimesofparis
And it’s probably not even on the screen right now. But the um like the cyclone two that I had refinished by a woman named Kat um painted with a guitar. So like I got I bought a mint guard for that one on Amazon and I got I’m like it’s kind of too green.
32:02.63
Joan of Heart
Yes, she goes to great work.
32:14.30
Joan of Heart
Um, ah yeah.
32:14.41
crimesofparis
I should be a subtler like it looks more subtle I didn’t want just stark white. So I think Jason said if he has enough material. He’s going to you know, make me a new one for that. So I gave him the old guard and ah maybe I’ll get a new one. But I think that was like keep me from stringing it up to be honest, but ah, lots of things keeping me from lots of things.
32:20.24
Joan of Heart
Awesome! Yeah, no, they’ll be great.
32:32.14
Joan of Heart
Know of this.
32:34.00
crimesofparis
Just like the smaller project I have a list of projects I need to do like literally restring guitar on it fill in redriill holes and ah swapping out next I have a lot of things on my to do list that I just am like oh ah, yeah, so it’s.
32:40.55
Joan of Heart
Yeah.
32:48.70
Joan of Heart
Yeah, no I I relate? Yeah I Yeah I also on on my end again. Knee string up something Luckily I have an extra pair of strings because I don’t know if they make the strings anymore. It was one of the ah.
32:53.54
crimesofparis
Um, yeah.
33:04.79
Joan of Heart
The baritone ucaleles that I mentioned this is the pono nui ah that I thought about afterwards and I remember that there’s a string that’s broken because it’s been stored for a while I haven’t used it so in our conversation I was like well maybe I should bring it out again and I should restring it with the strings that obviously I have an extra.
33:13.72
crimesofparis
My.
33:23.46
Joan of Heart
Ah, pack in there with um and see about just bringing out and using it again much like when you started playing the tender guitar again I was like ah maybe I should restring that and see about using it again. It’d be nice to revisit now.
33:33.35
crimesofparis
Ah, yeah.
33:37.18
Joan of Heart
Where I am now obviously with my effects chain and with that instrument. So I think I will at some point this month
33:44.14
crimesofparis
Nice, awesome! cool. Um, well normally this is where we plug the Patreon stuff we already plugged at ah now I think we need to do at the beginning I think it’s important. Ah, um, yeah, so let’s talk about some other.
33:51.46
Joan of Heart
Ah, we’re We’re all totally out of.
34:01.21
crimesofparis
Stuff that was in the news today I’m sorry this recently is ah we don’t just talk about guitar stuff here. Um, we we talk about a lot of music stuff because I major a music business. This is a topic that I know a little bit about and I’m I’m ah, really interested in.
34:01.61
Joan of Heart
Um, man.
34:20.56
crimesofparis
Um, and one of those things is publishing like when I I actually thought I wanted to go into publishing and for those who don’t know publishing is around the song itself. So someone writes a song they have a publishing house either. They release it on their own or that it gets pitched to other artists. Um.
34:36.26
Joan of Heart
Yes.
34:39.85
crimesofparis
Who don’t traditionally write their own music. So it’s all about the business of the songs and the song writing. Um, so there are lots of things in place now that protect songwriters from having things happen to them like happens to John Fogarty or the Beatles. Just 2 famous examples of people who lost control over their song catalog. So I’m not talking about this make this clear I’m not talking about the master recording. So the recorded version I’m not talking about that I’m talking about the song as in essence because when you have a recording of a song. We’re talking about 2 copyrights. We’re talking about the recording. So that’s what happens if you get ah dinged on Youtube for having someone else’s recorded song in your video. Ah your video will get demonetized and um if you don’t clip that part out.
35:16.70
Joan of Heart
Um. People.
35:29.15
Joan of Heart
Um.
35:31.19
Joan of Heart
Yeah, even if you do Yeah yep.
35:34.50
crimesofparis
And then the songwriter and actually universal whoever will get the money from the public performance of it. Um, no I’m not talking about that I’m talking about cover. No I’m not um so I actually I’ve had money money shared with the songwriter.
35:40.66
Joan of Heart
Even if it’s a cover. Yeah, that happened to me at that one All right.
35:51.60
Joan of Heart
Okay.
35:53.22
crimesofparis
Ah, for doing covers. But so if you play the actual recorded version. That’s the master recording if you do a cover. We’re just talking about the song but when you talk about the master recording. You’re also talking about the song because it’s both parts of the copyright. It’s confusing but it’s just.
36:03.22
Joan of Heart
Um, okay.
36:11.33
Joan of Heart
No, the way you way you said it made sense. So thank you? yeah.
36:12.30
crimesofparis
How it is um, great. Um, so that’s why if you it’s going to be universal music group that’s going to issue kind of like for lack of a better word. The cease and desist or the copyright claim copyright claim is what’s called so. The copyright claim on the master recording and then the money will get split with universal who then probably um with with the actual songwriter Whoever owns it. So Let’s talk about publishing because that’s what this is This is really about Um, you can have ah.
36:43.11
Joan of Heart
Um, yeah.
36:49.40
crimesofparis
Ah, gosh. How do I start this so what protects songwriters now is that immediately when you write a song There’s copyright that upon the creation of the work. That’s when the copyright kicks in. It’s best to register registering gives you a lot more protections. But all you really need to do is write it. It’s copyrighted and ah when you sign up with publishing a publishing house or like a pr o so if Pr is a performing rights organization csac Bmi and Ascap the United States so can in Canada etc. Most countries only have one. You register with your prro and 50% of that song is registered to you as an artist you as a person you as your name and the other 50% is your publishing entity and a lot. Ah if you actually have a publishing house. Like um I I turned out a company called skyline music publishing the other half would be skyline so you’d had the songwriter always owns half of their publishing the publishing firm owns half by default and you can do splits differently but by default. You you own half of that and you need to make sure you keep it forever. Um, because that’s how people get screwed is when that part of their publishing is signed away with other knowledge. It’s 1 thing to sell it like Bruce Springsteen and Bob Dylan and people are doing with theirs. But um, the important thing is this is in place to protect.
38:05.43
Joan of Heart
Um, in.
38:20.84
crimesofparis
Songwriters from predatory people in the music business. Um I don’t know how long that’s been the case but that’s the case now and that’s what matters. So John Fogarty I don’t really know the tenants of his um contract.
38:30.99
Joan of Heart
Yeah.
38:40.37
crimesofparis
But it sounded like ah he was um, entered in this contract with fantasy records and there was some stipulation that the band broke up each member of the band had to release music on fantasy and for every album not like every every option. So. Ah, you have a record label god there’s lot stuff to explain. Um, you’ve probably heard of something called an option on a record deal so you get 1 guaranteed record in 3 option periods that option period is optional for the record label is not optional for you. So if the record label wants you to release 4 albums total. You have to you don’t have the option to red egg on that contract. Um, but the record label has the option to say oh no, we we don’t want that you’re dropped or even worse.
39:17.17
Joan of Heart
Um, yeah.
39:29.52
Joan of Heart
Um, move.
39:31.36
crimesofparis
We’ we’re not going to release anything but we’re not going to release you from your contract. We just mean that Kesha recently went through if you want to read up on that. So yeah, so um I guess something with the options in this deal, you can read about this. There are videos on it. Um.
39:33.98
Joan of Heart
Oh yes, that’s horrible.
39:45.40
crimesofparis
Kind of kept him more Beholden kept his songs and publishing more beholden to fantasy for a longer period of time and he wasn’t able to reclaim that and for the record I am fully going on the verbiage that he is using and ah if he because you might talk about.
39:57.50
Joan of Heart
Moon.
40:04.20
crimesofparis
Publishing for songs in the master recording in the same breath but they’re not the same thing they get interchanged incorrectly a lot. Um, but yeah, it sounds like he didn’t own the publishing on them. Which is how John Fogarty got sued for sounding too much like himself for an album. He released in 1984 I think.
40:26.55
Joan of Heart
That’s that’s something else to be sued by yourself for yourself for me? No, but this is ah.
40:31.45
crimesofparis
It’s literally one of the funniest things ever to happen and like not funny haha. But like Wow this is this business sucks if you if you ever want. Ah if if you ever we get screwed go into the music industry. Um.
40:43.14
Joan of Heart
Oh ah I know.
40:47.63
crimesofparis
Or if you were an example of just like how predatory and absurd this is go to the music industry so he he gained back his publishing rights is what rolling stones reporting. So apparently somehow fantasy owned these for a very long time. And I’m not sure why but I think it has to do with how the ban broke up and how their their contract was red and so yeah, if you’re not familiar with the story. Um, fantasy sued John Fogarty and his label for releasing.
41:10.27
Joan of Heart
Ah, the division. Yeah I get you.
41:25.32
crimesofparis
Ah, song I think it was called old man down the road that sounded too much like run through the jungle and John Fogerty had to go on the stand and he had to explain like hey you know it’s just it’s the genre similarities. Maybe there are some chord similarities but like if he’s doing swamp rock is like the genre. It’s.
41:40.10
Joan of Heart
Yeah, it’s like buy you swamp rock. Yeah.
41:44.89
crimesofparis
Yeah, it’s it’s like suing someone known for boss and Novas because then they release another boss a Nova It’s like these are styles of music and some styles of music are a little bit more. Yeah, some of them are just kind of like beholden to certain structures and there’s really only so many chords.
41:51.78
Joan of Heart
Oh yeah, can I copyright come or can yeah.
42:04.29
Joan of Heart
You can’t see someone for chord progressions be it is it is your head If yeah, go ahead. Yeah because I’m just like what really.
42:04.77
crimesofparis
You can put in a row. So oh you can, but it’s stupid Barvin Gay’s a estate Marvin’s I’ll talk about that in a bit too Marvin Gay’s estate sued um Ed Sheeran yeah you can um, but heat that I think it went all supreme court. And eventually John Fogarty was found to have not ah infringed upon himself. Ah, but that was essentially it I think I think fantasy was mad that he had a hit record and ah and that song specifically.
42:27.39
Joan of Heart
Of course. Ah.
42:34.23
Joan of Heart
Her.
42:39.84
crimesofparis
May or may not have been about the person who really screwed him out of his music so it seems really personal. Yeah, it seemed more like a personal attack than actually being base inma and eventually fantasy even had to pay a million bucks for his lawyer fees John Fogarty’s um, but John Fogarty fans
42:46.42
Joan of Heart
Ah, the and.
42:51.19
Joan of Heart
Off she end.
42:57.50
crimesofparis
Doesn’t exist anymore and like 95 ish fantasy was sold to concord music group along with all of its assets concord music group is a collection of a bunch of labels including like rounder records obviously fantasy and ah they they release some new stuff. Um, but that that by and large that that group makes music makes money from older music so he resigned with fantasy after it got bought by um concord and it sounds like part of that simulation of that deal was that he ah he got to get his so publishing back.
43:32.30
Joan of Heart
No early.
43:33.97
crimesofparis
And I think that’s a when when um Concord Concord had a little bit more time to like make the money on it and then he got 50 years fucking later he got um his but his music bag.
43:41.24
Joan of Heart
Yeah, and I think it it also says yeah, it also says something about the has also entered an agreement with concord to allow the label to reinvigorate his catalog as well.
43:55.35
crimesofparis
Yeah, well um, copyright law states that us publishing rights would have to revert back to him in the next several years this is from rolling stone. Um John Fogarty’s wife and manager Julie figured they would go to Concord with an offer to buy the global rights instead while the law would allow.
44:01.65
Joan of Heart
No.
44:11.69
crimesofparis
Fogarty to regain publishing rice in the us. It wouldn’t apply to any other country but the he’s biggest in the us so Concord declined at first according to billboard so fogartty partnered with irving isoff who helped ah get the deal over quote over the finish line. So ah, great for irving what a.
44:16.40
Joan of Heart
Yeah.
44:29.69
Joan of Heart
God f yeah, it’s a fits miracle I mean like waiting more than 50 years for something like that.
44:30.43
crimesofparis
Great guy like helping him do that now. It’s so long. Um, but yeah, irving is a legend. Ah this is just I recommend reading up on reading up on him a little bit. Ah, but yeah. So John Fogarty has a song writes back congrat let’s hear it for John ah, it’s a very sad thing to know that other people are making money off of your back forever in perpetuity and you’re not making anything now that’s that’s that’s the tragic truth of a lot of people I know Tom petty.
44:54.80
Joan of Heart
That’s awesome.
45:01.62
Joan of Heart
Yep! nope.
45:09.17
Joan of Heart
I.
45:09.25

Made it one of his life. Um causes to teach people about you know, maintaining their copyright not selling their publishing to or giving it away. Um too Early. You have to bet on yourself is the truth. Um, and sometimes people will come to you with deals that say. They will only release your music or do something if you give away too much of it and I think that’s the time when you really should understand that they just they obviously think they’re going to make money off of you if you do that like they’re not. They’re not just taking a bet. They’re not doing this to be nice.
45:41.54
Joan of Heart
Um, yeah, they know.
45:45.71
crimesofparis
They want your they want your rights because they they think they can make money off of it So somebody else is betting on you like that just flip the script bet on yourself. Um, you don’t have as much pool as a younger artist which is why I think more and more artists are kind of at least trying to do it themselves but ah.
46:00.77
Joan of Heart
Um, yeah.
46:05.54
crimesofparis
It’s it’s a really cool thing. Um like famously. Ah Paul Mccartney doesn’t own a lot of the rights to beatles songs I guess I don’t know as much about Tom Petty’s endeavors with it. But ah yeah, that’s wild stuff.
46:18.85
Joan of Heart
Yeah, now at at least for what I remember of the Paul Mccartney was the whole like Michael Jackson buying his catalog and that whole like Feud that went on like yeah, that was wild. Yeah, no.
46:24.36
crimesofparis
And.
46:29.52
crimesofparis
Know the the funniest part of that and not funny. Haha once again, but like wow what a fucking dickhead was ah Paul gave Michael Jackson the idea to buy other people’s song catalogues because he said it could be lucrative and Paul I think tried to be less like.
46:38.65
Joan of Heart
Yes, yes, he did. Ah yeah, um.
46:47.38
crimesofparis
Ah, exploitative about it. Um, but I don’t think Paul Bucarney is exactly giving everybody their publishing back but I don’t really know the facts of it. So I think it’s life plus 70 years in the United States so um I’m glad there are laws that help people get their publishing back.
46:55.68
Joan of Heart
Move move? Yeah, there’s a lifetime.
47:05.80
crimesofparis
But that’s a very long time to wait but you brought up another kind of funny topic. Ah, you can’t see somebody from a chord for a chord progression. Oh yeah, you can and people do and have us fully. Um, so as far as ah, talking about Tom Petty again
47:16.88
Joan of Heart
Ah, they do.
47:24.93
crimesofparis
Sam Smith they put out a song and I just ah, don’t remember what the song was but sounded had the same chors as don’t back down but we’ll back down by Tom Petty um and ah Tom Petty got at it as a songwriter on that song. Do I think.
47:31.88
Joan of Heart
Um, yeah.
47:39.36
Joan of Heart
Um, yeah.
47:43.57
crimesofparis
That should have happened. No.
47:44.92
Joan of Heart
No exactly I mean yeah, it’s no hard feelings but these things happen sometimes is pretty much what the statements were yeah.
47:51.41
crimesofparis
Know you know the 1 thing about that I remember it was stay with me. It did have a similar melody and I think that really was what kind of pushed over the plate but Marvin Gaze very famously litigious to unfortunate success. Ah state. Ah, sued most famously blurred lines. Um Robin thick from blurred lines because they had the same kind of groove and Robin thick famously said you can’t copyright a groove and Marvin Gayes a state said. Oh yes, we can really the only similar thing between those two beats is the instrumentation.
48:13.22
Joan of Heart
Okay.
48:27.95
crimesofparis
And the vibe. So it’s it’s again, it’s like suing it’s like saying you own a bossanova you you don’t or the charles or Charleston rhythm and stuff like that which people try to do all the time because there are things in music that are just they’re everywhere and they’re very similar.
48:31.84
Joan of Heart
Yeah.
48:46.88
crimesofparis
And you can’t pretend to own it but mar mc gates estate did and then they got five million dollars and half of the publishing for that song forever really stupid stuff and they’re actually suing I don’t know if they I don’t remember where this ended up if it ended up anywhere.
48:47.70
Joan of Heart
No, and there.
48:53.91
Joan of Heart
Oh.
49:06.22
crimesofparis
Um, Ed Sheeran for the song thinking out loud saying it’s too similar to let’s get it on because it has the same chords. It’s just an r and b chord progression that the Marvin Gay estate is saying that before Marvin Gaye used those chords in that progression that no one had before.
49:12.67
Joan of Heart
A.
49:25.44
crimesofparis
That’s literally what they’re saying or at least to success.
49:28.19
Joan of Heart
Ah, yeah, well I think the last update said in July of 2022 that they were definitely going to court over it. Yeah.
49:37.84
crimesofparis
Yeah I hope that I hope the Marvin Gay estate loses because I think it’s absurd to ah try to copy say you in the copyright for this chord progression that has for the record been used many times before since Marvin Gaye did but you’re not suing all those people. Obviously because there’s no money in it and it’s not like a trademark where you have to protect it evenly to protect it at all. Ah, but trademark you have to at least show you’re enforcing it I don’t think copyright law is the same way. But I’m not a lawyer but um.
50:09.99
Joan of Heart
Not not like yeah well I mean it doesn’t sound like it’s kind of a thing of you know Gibson not defending something for 4 years and then deciding to you know, start suing people over something that has again. Yeah Jericho.
50:12.39
crimesofparis
I Guess it has the same chords and similar bpm.
50:24.73
crimesofparis
Again, yeah, yeah, so I think that the gay estate feels like they won um us a caseation of one like they compared the sheet music for those 2 songs and the thing is the jury just. Didn’t really know what they were looking at or talking about or the subject matter and it’s happened before Katie Perry’s dark horse song got sued for having kind of a similar like thing in the background and ah initially was found at fault.
50:48.75
Joan of Heart
Um, you know.
50:53.90
Joan of Heart
Yeah.
50:58.69
crimesofparis
And then a judge throughout through throughout the verdict essentially because it usually no, it’s not the same. Ah, but um, what Ed Sheeran has done that doesn’t help him at all is he’s play thinking out loud at shows and then gone into let’s get it on.
51:15.20
Joan of Heart
Oh no, yeah, that is very dumb.
51:17.21
crimesofparis
Because they are quite similar stupid choice. bad bad choice legal perspective at the same time Elvis Costello will play Allison at shows and he’ll go into tracks of my tears and Smokey Robinson has never threatened to Sue Elvis Costello for doing that. But.
51:33.78
Joan of Heart
Yeah, everyone picks and chooses their battles.
51:35.36
crimesofparis
Um, the similarity is a see according to musiccologize.com. The similarity is a series of 4 chords that simply repeats over and over through. Let’s get it on in the harmonic rhythm with which it does So I’m just going to change that word because um. It’s a good portion of the groove. Um, that’s it that the the has a few elements to appreciate versus it’ a chord progression. The simultaneousness that form the harmony played with rhythm on toal guitars mostly blah bla Blah let me did did did the okay, let’s look at the chords themselves.
52:14.22
crimesofparis
Oh god this is a long article I thought was at the end. Ah the 2 bars or 8 beat bubble. Oh my god I’m not reading this out loud I’m sorry guys. Um I’m just going to try go the verdict is there a verdict is there a verdict of.
52:15.27
Joan of Heart
New I Know we don’t have that for that for the I don’t think there is I didn’t see one.
52:31.56
crimesofparis
Supreme importance thinking out loud melody and Lyric has nothing of consequence in common with let’s get it on um, unbelievably the plaintiffs never mention even the melody or the notes they’re just because they’re both ah quote exceptionally un alike.
52:33.80
Joan of Heart
And it.
52:51.36
crimesofparis
I Just don’t think they’re similar um enough I I wonder if I can look up what other songs use the same chord progression as let’s get it on.
52:55.38
Joan of Heart
And.
53:05.18
Joan of Heart
I Bet there’ll be quite a few.
53:09.33
crimesofparis
I yeah um I mean there are just so many songs that you can look at that have the same chord reg progression. Nobody owns one four 5 you can’t um.
53:16.10
Joan of Heart
Um, the.
53:25.93
crimesofparis
Yeah, you can’t so there we go I don’t I don’t know what I’ll say about that I will read that article later probably but I just I don’t think it has legs but that doesn’t mean I don’t think that the gay estate’s going to win.
53:40.24
Joan of Heart
No doesn’t doesn’t really make sense at this point because yeah, there’s a lot of people making similar chord progression song. It doesn’t mean it’s the same thing they’ll all mostly sound different in some way or another.
53:51.91
crimesofparis
If the gay estate wins this it is going to be horrible for the recording industry people are going to be much more afraid to write songs now.
54:01.10
Joan of Heart
Yeah, that’s I remember when this first came out. That’s what people were saying that. Yeah, if this was a situation like that that yeah people would be afraid of writing certain chord progressions or in certain styles because.
54:16.95
crimesofparis
Yeah, yeah I mean you get things in your head accidentally or it’s just like a normal progression you you just can’t own these things imagine imagine if.
54:18.58
Joan of Heart
Threat of being sued I mean big fish a little fish like who’s going to win Really? yeah.
54:34.23
crimesofparis
Ah, you couldn’t use the the same chords that are in wonder wall like that’s that’s a lot of songs guys. It’s just a lot of songs so pain in the ass to to go through this over and over. But um I makes me glad to not be ah.
54:39.82
Joan of Heart
Yeah, yeah.
54:51.21
Joan of Heart
Yes.
54:52.40
crimesofparis
Involved Nobody is suing me for the songs that I write for being too similar to other stuff because that they’ve ever heard them. They haven’t heard him but.
55:00.84
Joan of Heart
No No I mean influences are most of what music is made based off of so if you make a riff or make some type of like corporation like hey that reminds me so and so and I was like oh. I Don’t even know who that band is but thank you now we’ll check them out like you have no idea whether that person just came up with that and just has no idea what the reference is it just happened like somebody else can have a similar idea on another side of the world.
55:26.17
crimesofparis
Yeah I had to stop playing new music for my husband because he’d always like oh yeah, that sounds just like stop. It don’t Also don’t do that to people who are writing songs unless you think that they’re going to get sued because of it. Oh yes, this.
55:32.18
Joan of Heart
Oh no, no oh yeah, that reminds me of like nope.
55:43.87
crimesofparis
Exact same melody of ah like the my sweet Lord has to say no my sweet Lord has the same melody as that a other song that that you heard I was a radiohead now. It’s like remember when Du alippa was getting sued by that like us.
55:49.87
Joan of Heart
I Like no I will not tell that nope.
56:01.86
crimesofparis
Florida scar reggae band that no one had ever heard of over like the exact same thing that they stole from an outcast song I’m like that is okay now hat to to Adam Neely for that one? Um, yeah, but that’s what.
56:04.24
Joan of Heart
Oh my God um.
56:10.35
Joan of Heart
Ah, it’s the vicious cycle.
56:17.87
crimesofparis
Got so far it was we talked about Goofy Guitar shit and then publishing this very cohesive episode totally cohesive, um, anything else because I am tapped.
56:23.80
Joan of Heart
Um, yes, totally silly. No I think we’re pretty good for today.
56:32.48
crimesofparis
Awesome! Well for everybody out there. Thanks for watching slash listening until next time my name is Emily goodbye.
56:36.47
Joan of Heart
