You’ve Never Seen These Features in a Tremolo: Dreadbox Treminator

I’m a big fan of tremolo, but beyond adding multiple waveforms, many of the tremolo pedals on the market don’t do anything particularly new.

Enter the Dreadbox Treminator. This tremolo pedal has features I’ve rarely or NEVER seen on a tremolo before, including the ability to fade in or out of a tremolo and increase or decrease the rate without using an expression pedal.

Note: a machine made this, so it’s not perfect, but if you’re hearing impaired and have any questions about what we said, please feel free to ask us in the comments or send us an email with the form below.

my name is Emily and I hope you’re

having a lovely day

um and if you’re not I just I sincerely

hope your day improves somewhat even the

people who leave mean nasty rude

comments I hope your day improves I

assume it must improve because if you’re

having a good day I don’t think you’d be

so nasty

but I’m here with my newest tremolo

petal by dreadbox it’s called The

Terminator and it is the most features

Rich tremolo pedal I’ve ever played I

first saw this at summer Nam and I knew

I had to have it uh it has things that

I’ve just legitimately never seen before

in any tremolo petal so let’s get into

it so I know I said this thing was

features Rich which could mean

complicated and I mean it is there are

secondary settings there are kind of

unique ways to use it but it can be just

a standard tremolo so right now I have

the depth Max just so you can hear it

better I have the shape set to Triangle

and I have the rate in the middle which

is about a one second

tremolo I will be playing this music man

Cutlass through the Benson Chimera mix

wave plug-in and I’m going to put some

fuzz on that just to up the visual

interest I love tremolo into gain pedals

uh just because you know you drive a

gain pedal with more input the the

Distortion or the amount of overdrive or

fuzz gets bigger with more volume so I’m

just gonna do that because I think it’s

fun

all right

again I have the rate set at about one

second triangle full depth

[Music]

[Music]

foreign

so as you can hear it gets quite choppy

and it can go quite long between the

points of that wave you have a few

shapes here you have this falling

Sawtooth

so that starts with a punch and kind of

Fades out we’ve done the triangle this

is the rising Sawtooth

foreign

[Music]

oh I only got quite hit Square there

we go and random

[Music]

which is interesting and as you heard

um you can go between different

waveforms as well

foreign

[Music]

than it had been but not completely

[Music]

so it’s interesting a little more subtle

um

I generally try to get it close to the

waveform I’m going for let’s have

something else in regards to this pedal

there are a few controls I haven’t

touched yet that’s on purpose you will

see that there are divisions for that

tap Tempo I don’t usually use

any subdivisions so that’s not something

I’m going to touch in this demo you’ll

notice that the indicator light does

show you the tempo which is great

but you’ve also probably noticed this

light here going on and off

[Music]

that relates to something called the

threshold which you can fine tune and I

do recommend fine-tuning the threshold

for some of these secondary settings so

right now mine’s just in the middle but

to change the threshold you hold down on

the on switch and you just adjust

to make it more or less sensitive

[Music]

and when that light goes off that is

where we get into some fun stuff this

fade knob you’ll see is in the middle

but if I turn it over

counterclockwise I can fade into

a tremolo sound check this out

it’s a little more apparent when it’s

faster

[Music]

even faster

[Laughter]

I also have quite a bit of Reverb on so

I think that’s an added little bit of

fun for us but you’ll hear that it

increases in depth as

um as the note progresses that I’m

holding out and when that light goes out

that’s when I can hit another note or

hit another chord and have it start that

cycle again anything I play with while

that light is on will just be a part of

that tremolo cycle so I can hit a chord

and wait

foreign

so I waited on the first three chords to

have sharpson an A and then I went

through another series of chords in

quick succession and you heard that it

didn’t start at that sequence after

every chord it was when the input signal

dipped below a certain threshold

[Laughter]

and you can control the length of that

fade

it’s a little long for the amount of

input volume

that’s much shorter you can also Fade

Out

[Music]

which I think is also cool I can’t

decide which one I like more I really

like them both a lot and it’s something

I’ve really never seen in a tremolo

petal while I’m sure it exists it’s not

something that exists on any tremolo

pedal that I’m aware of having and I

think that’s a really creative and neat

so let’s talk about some of the

secondary settings I’m not going to get

in to all of them but there’s one I

definitely want to talk about and I’ve

only ever seen this on one other pedal

again I’m sure this exists in other

petals but on secondary settings

fade turns into rate expression and

depth turns into rate expression amount

so it’s kind of related to the fade in

and out but instead of controlling the

depth which is what you control with the

fade in and out it is the depth it will

go to or from the maximum depth

um it will again go faster or slower so

let’s mess with that a little bit when

we go under the halfway point anywhere

under there we get the speed up we’re

going to set the speed here

let’s hold that down turn that knob

let’s make it get kind of fast and let’s

see how this sounds

it got faster

[Music]

as the note rang out and as it dipped

into that threshold

[Music]

and you can still control the depth

separately so I’m going to set that

depth not maxed

[Music]

and now let’s hear it slowing down

[Music]

[Laughter]

[Music]

thank you

I honestly just think that sounds really

really cool let’s try it on some

different waveforms let’s go to random

[Music]

[Music]

whenever I see a random tremolo on

something I kind of feel like uh it’s

you’re trying to get something kind of

glitchy

dude it’s kind of unpredictable I don’t

use it a lot but it is a Vibe for sure

[Music]

foreign

[Music]

try that falling

Rising Sawtooth

and let’s slow that down even more see

if we can

foreign

[Music]

foreign

[Music]

[Laughter]

[Music]

I also don’t really use tremolo a lot on

like solos or lead stuff if I do it’s

usually a faster tremolo with a lower

depth

[Music]

that was actually kind of fun

foreign

I like that

I might slip that into a bag of tricks

I wasn’t expecting to like that as much

as I do

there is some other stuff that you can

do with these secondary features

um the big one is waveform reset and

that’s when

this shape knob is turned to more than

50 percent I feel like you have to kind

of

um

fine tune the threshold to get the most

use out of this but the idea is that as

you can hear the waveform just resets

when you reach that threshold which is

kind of interesting now I have the

secondary function for the waveform

reset turned on I have it to Rising

Sawtooth a very low rate of speed which

I hope will make it more obvious and the

idea here is that you get that waveform

whenever you want it based on that reset

versus having to really time it out so

let’s see if we can get it going

foreign

[Music]

foreign

[Music]

so I could almost use it as an on demand

swelling tool I could probably also use

it as an on-demand falling tool

[Music]

to give quick dropouts of course if I am

playing longer it should still trigger

the normal cycle

foreign

[Music]

there you go but that is a use case that

I mean it’s it’s interesting let’s be

honest that is something I have not seen

on a tribula pedal so there’s three

really unique things about this pedal in

addition to just being a standard

you know use it the way you’re used to

using it kind of tremolo

and then you have fade in Fade Out

you have uh you have envelope control so

you can speed up or slow down based on

where you are in that threshold and you

have that wave form reset which I find

would be most valuable for kind of

getting Auto swells or quick Fade Out so

you want without having to like bounce

around a volume pedal or use another

pedal that’s designed to do that you can

have a couple different settings

and uh use them you use a few of them so

big thanks to dreadbox for sending me

this petal uh in exchange for

demonstration I am in all of its feature

set I really like the rising and falling

and I think that’s probably mostly how

I’m going to use this pedal

um although I do very much like the the

envelope rate control as well I think

that’s really super cool I probably

won’t use the waveform reset very much

but it isn’t interesting to have kind of

feature and you can save those secondary

features to the pedal uh just check out

the manual for instructions on how to do

that

um again

really really cool and unique device

um that’s what I really like about

dreadbox is

I I was worried that people were done

finding new things to do with certain

kinds of effects and it’s obvious that

that’s not the case so there are really

exciting company thank you again for

everybody watching please consider using

the affiliate links in the video

description if there’s anything in the

world that you want I’ll have links to

this product as well buy independently

when whenever you can of course but

uh this company is based in Greece I

believe they do have U.S distribution
