Is it absurd to put the fanciest pickups I could find into a Squier Cyclone? Yes, absolutely, but I loved the feel of the Cyclone and didn’t love the pickups. So I picked up a set of Josefina Hand Wound Fat ’60s Stratocaster Pickups and dropped them into my Squier Paranormal Series Cyclone.
Of course, I did a side-by-side comparison to the Fender® Designed Alnico Single-Coils it came with.
Do they sound better? Oh, absolutely. Are they worth the price? You be the judge.
Amp is Strymon Iridium, Round, B
Effects are Hot Cake and Seths Fuzz

Josefina Hand Wound Fat ’60s Stratocaster Demo Review and Back-to-Back Comparison
Hey, welcome to get offset. My name is Emily and I’m putting brand new pickups and my Squier Cylone. Yes. This guitar that I just got, I’m already putting these pickups in , I, I didn’t love the stock pickups. Um, I liked that they’re supposed to be like a Strat kind of pickup as opposed to a JAG.
[00:00:25] Uh, I don’t really have anything with super Strat-esque pickups. Um, outside of my Squier paranormal series, Offset Tele. I put a Lollar royal t in the neck, so that’s kinda like a straty neck. Oh. But I have these Josefina hand wound, fat 60 pickups that you can’t see, but you can see the certificate of authenticity.
[00:00:51] It says the hand wound fat 60 Strat pickups are outfitted with beveled. Aniko two magnets, which offer a warm lows, rich mid range, and mellow highs capturing the sound of age pickups from the earliest 60. These for luscious vintage inspired tones. The middle pickup is, is a reverse wound, reverse polarity.
[00:01:14] I think that’s what RWRP stands for for a superior home cancellation. The overwhelmed design gives these pickups added low end punch for an extra shot of modern attitude. And these were hand wound by Josefina Campos, the master pickup wonder at fender, typically to get a set of these pickups in a guitar, you have to buy a really, really nice guitar, but there they are.
[00:01:41] And all their hand wound glory, and I am going to put them. I’m here. So of course I want to do an AB test. So do you think that he’s, uh, pickups that I bought for the record, um, are going to sound better than the stock Squire pickups? I would be shocked if they did not sound a significantly better.
[00:02:12] So, this is kind of like one of those experiments, like, should I have been comparing like a set of Lambert tones or Porter pickups or either Lollars to these? Yeah, probably, but this is what I wanted to do. I got a little, a Strat diagram though. I will I’ll I will probably use it if I have to, but I’m going to try to do kind of one thing at a time.
[00:02:37] So, uh, I don’t get, I don’t get confused. And this is not the only model I’m doing with this guitar. So be sure to check back. I do have some wild wiring plans for this, for this guitar, but I’m not quite there yet. Um, I’m very intimidated by the wiring harness, uh, and I just kind of wanted to do them separately.
[00:03:02] They’re very different things. The wiring harness is. Crazy and wild, the pickups are plastic and classy. So I wanted to separate those videos a little bit also. Yeah, this will be enough soldering for one day. Um, but the next thing I want to do is I’m going to play through these stock pickups. I’m going to play obviously.
[00:03:30] The cyclone got my transit lab cable going into my Seth’s fuzz by bookworm device, a bookworm effects. And I had that going into the crowd there, hotcake high that going into the stream and Iridium I’m with the middle, the medium room set to about 11, uh, drive is going to be set to about nine. So mostly clean sound.
[00:03:52] And I’m going to factor through the round B chime B and punch B. And, uh, then we’ll do the exact same thing when I saw the pickups up out so we can, uh, we can hear the difference. Cool. Cool. Alright, let’s start with the neck clean. Uh huh. Oh, what do I want to play?
[00:04:34] I think that already sounds a lot better.
[00:04:53] Just middle.
[00:05:11] Middle bridge.
[00:05:26] Okay.
[00:06:04] And next bridge
[00:06:19] Oh yeah, that already sounds better. And it frigging better for her how much Hanwell and pickups costs. You know what I mean? Alright. Alright. Let’s get our FAS on. Actually, let’s see, let’s start with overdrive.
[00:06:52] right.
[00:07:14] yeah, neck, middle
[00:08:39] rich.
[00:08:46] okay.
[00:10:46] Aha. All right, let’s try it with some fun neck only.
[00:15:37] hello. Let’s just go. I’m going to turn the hot cake back on. I’m going to cycle very, very quickly just with the, uh, uh, neck middle, um, with the. Uh, the round B that’s offender B the chime B the box was just the box B and the punch B, which is the Marshall B I forget what exactly the cabinets
[00:17:28] I friggin love these pickups almost said a bad word.
[00:17:59] nice. And we’ll go to the Marshall.
[00:18:39] Well, that was just a quick look at these pickups. I think you’re going to hear a lot more of them cause I, I liked them.
[00:20:00] Yeah, that was probably a good signal to stop going out of tune. Um, but the, these, uh, Josefina hand wound pickups, I think they sound really nice. Do they sound, uh, what they call us in the fender website? Nice. I mean, I am not as much of an audio file as a lot of people. Um, You know, I don’t necessarily think Hanwell and pick ups are better than machine wound pick ups.
[00:20:30] I don’t think, I don’t think it’s as easy to get that consistency, but if any of buddy candidate probably Josefina, she is the head pick of blinder at fender. Um, and I think it’s really cool to have some of her pickups in one of my guitars. And that’s pretty meaningful, meaningful to me. And super neat.
[00:20:47] And I definitely think these are an upgrade from the stock pickups. Would it have been just as good sounding to have gotten the Lamberton triple shots or something from Lawler or something from Porter pickups, or any really any of the boutique builders? Um, I don’t know. I can’t answer that question ultimately.
[00:21:08] It’s what do you think, what do you think sounds best to your years? Um, How much money are you willing to pay on pickups? Um, ultimately you set the value of anything that you buy. So if you don’t think that they’re worth the money, then they’re not worth the money to you. And that’s totally fine. And, uh, it doesn’t, it doesn’t mean other people shouldn’t buy them if it’s worth the money to them.
[00:21:33] So that’s all I have to say about that. I, you know, have lots of opinions about that and I think mostly that, um, just let people like what they like. I like these, but let me know in the comments, if you could hear the difference, let me know in the comments, if you think that it’s stupid to have Hanwell and pickups or, or whatever, I don’t know.
[00:21:54] Let’s just have a comp, let’s have some conversations, but, um, anyway, thanks for watching things for understanding. Once again, my name is Emily. Please like comment, subscribe below.
